MENSCITYBLOG Ed4 - Stoking The Fire
Stoking the fire - Part 1
Verb (used with object), stoked, stok·ing. to poke, stir up, and feed (a fire). to tend the fire of (a furnace, especially one used with a boiler to generate steam for an engine); supply with fuel.
It can be hard in this modern world to keep your passion for Christ strong. Life can be so busy that you barely have a second to stop and pause let alone time to pursue that which you are passionate about. Living a life with Jesus at the centre, in today’s world can be even harder.
We need to TRUST that we MATTER to God, and that he is at work in our lives and in the world. That He is the light in all the dark places, and the answer to the worlds problems.
The fire in our hearts for Jesus is something that has to be kindled daily through reading of his word, worship and being in community with other believers that are burning for Jesus.
History was forever changed because of those hearts set on fire as described in Acts 2:1-4.
Acts 2:1-4 New International Version (NIV)
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
This passage is about an encounter the disciples had that wasn’t contained to their little “church prayer meeting”. It spread out onto the streets and the gospel message was preached and many were saved that day. When we encounter the Lord there is always an opportunity to let our encounter become someone else's. This is what, “living with a fire” is about
The church is called to burn with a passion to see the love of God we’ve freely received be poured out. The fire in our hearts should be contagious - bringing light to the darkest situations and revealing to this world the glorious hope and promise we have in Him!
Do you live with a fire for Jesus?
Back in September I was fortunate enough to see the band Rend Collective (a worship band from Northern Ireland whose songs we play in church). Watching them deliver their worship set with such passion and energy really fired me up to do the same. It made me re focus my drive to bring the best worship I can each and every time and keep that passion for praise and worship on fire.
So what is it that ignites your passions for God, is it worship, the word, talking to others and sharing your story? Whatever it is that stokes your fire for Jesus, make time for it, pursue it with a burning passion and live a life for Jesus.
